What is Mental Health?

There is often a lot of confusion about what we mean when we talk about mental health. Many people immediately start thinking about mental health problems or mental illness – but this is only one part of the picture.

Everyone has ‘mental health’ and this can be thought of in terms of:

  • How we feel about ourselves and the people around us.
  • Our ability to make and keep friends and relationships.
  • Our ability to learn from others and to develop emotionally.

Being mentally healthy is also about having the strength to overcome the difficulties and challenges we can all face at times in our lives – to have confidence and self- esteem, to be able to take decisions and to believe in ourselves.

Having said that we all have mental health, it’s also important to understand when you might need to get some help or support with how you are feeling – or to know when perhaps you may be experiencing a more serious problem.

It is quite normal to sometimes feel worried, anxious or upset when things don’t go as you hope – everyone faces pressure in their lives at certain times and these can include:

  • Exams
  • Work and getting a job
  • Growing up and becoming more independent from your family
  • Making up (and breaking up) with friends

You can find more information to help if you are feeling stressed or under pressure from any of these on our website at www.rethink.org/youngpeople

Mental health problems affect many more young people than you probably realise:

  • National studies suggest that in the UK, about 1 in 10 (10%) of all young peoplemay experience a mental health problem or disorder where they may need help from a mental health specialist.
  • Approx 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem
  • 792 billion people are affected by mental health worldwide
  • 34% of students report having psychological difficulties for which they needed professional help
  • In the UK the highest suicide rate among men is 45-49, in the republic of Ireland the highest rate among men is aged 55-65.
  • In 2018, there was 6,154 suicides in the UK. Meaning that more than 16 people per day took their own lives
  • According to a survey by the Mental Health Foundation, only 13% of UK people consider themselves to be living with high levels of good mental health
  • In a survey by the NUS 78% of students said they had experienced mental health.

What might cause poor mental health?

  • Missing family, friends or partner
  • Juggling academic work with work commitments
  • Age
  • Worrying about your next steps after college or university
  • Meeting deadlines
  • Expectations
  • Financial pressures
  • Trauma or abuse
  • Change in personal situation
  • NOTHING! - Sometimes there isn't a trigger or a reason
Everybody has mental health, and looking after your mental health is just important as looking after your physical.

Awareness and understanding of mental health has improved dramatically in recent years, thanks to campaigns like Time to Changerun by Mind and Rethink Mental Illness. We now have a much better understanding of the fact that we all have mental health just as we all have physical health, and that we need to look after it. For too long people have struggled in silence, either unaware that they can access help for the mental health problems they are experiencing, or scared to speak out because of what others might think.

World Mental Health Day Saturday 10th October 2020 | Mind Brighton and Hove

Many of us are feeling worried, stressed or anxious about how coronavirus could affect our lives, as well as our loved ones. It might feel like things are changing, and there is a lot that’s outside of our control, we may now be having to spend more time at home, perhaps isolated from the friends, family and other relationships that we know are vital to keeping ourselves mentally healthy. It may also be harder for us to do the things that normally help keep us well, but looking after your mental health in these challenging times is just as important as taking care of your physical health.

Please look at our VLE mental health support page for tips and information on how you can look after your own mental health and how you can support others.

If you would like to talk to someone about your mental health, please email the Student Welfare Officer who can talk to you about this: support@futureworks.ac.uk
