Important announcement about assessments

We know that the current situation is putting a lot of pressure on students, and it can be hard to make the best of your assessments without access to the campus. We also know that many of you have extra challenges right now – of being key workers, having to juggle studies with home-schooling or caring responsibilities, or suffering ill health from COVID.

For all our students, it is important that you attempt all assessments.

In summary, in the event you fail or don’t submit you will be offered a resit as your first attempt. However, we would strongly encourage you to attempt your exams and assessments on the original dates if possible, as many resits will take place in August and by then you will have other priorities and hopefully the world will have returned to something more like normality. It is always best to get your assessments out of the way on time and resits should be a last resort.

This is how the ‘no detriment’ procedure around all assessments for Academic Year 2020-21 will be implemented.

You do not need to apply for Mitigating Circumstances (MCs) related to Covid

  • Because of the scale of the impact of the pandemic on students, you now no longer need to apply for MCs for Covid 19 as these will be automatically applied to all work done this year
  • After you take an exam or assessment, your results will be compared to other cohorts, and adjusted if necessary, to ensure that grades are not unfairly affected as a result of the pandemic
  • If you have mitigating circumstances for non-covid related matters, you need to apply as normal. Students need to complete an application form which can be obtained from Student Services. External evidence will be needed to support their application and returned with the completed application to support@futureworks.ac.uk. Applications will be reviewed and an email sent to the student confirming whether the application has been successful. Please note that submitting an application does not mean automatic approval.

If you fail or cannot take an assessment

  • You will be given an ‘I’ grade for that assessment which means you can make a further attempt – you will be sent an email with details of the work and the submission date after the Assessment Board

We hope this reassures you about the mechanisms in place, to ensure you have the best possible chance at getting the grades you deserve. If you have any questions, please contact your Programme Leader or Student Services who will be best placed to answer your course-specific questions.
